WHY WE DO IT

Freedom of expression matters

Free expression is an essential part of being human, of defining us as individuals while allowing us to understand one another and create human society. In addition, borrowing from the International Free Expression Exchange:

Freedom of expression enables citizens to understand their communities – and the world: It is inextricably linked to the ability to access and share information and make informed decisions.

It is essential to good government and economic and social progress: The freedom to express opinions, challenge those in power and share ideas creates the conditions necessary to improve economic and social conditions.

It helps ensure the protection of all human rights: Freedom of expression enables citizens, journalists and advocacy groups to draw attention to the violation of other human rights.

Free Expression is under particularly grave threat at this moment in history.
The International Free Expression Project is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to building public support for free expression.
